I imagine from the title of this gallery you may already be picturing Madonna dancing across the stage in her cone bra and her big poofy Like A Virgin skirt. I also imagine, you may be well into the chorus of humming tunes such as "Material Girl" or "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" to yourself. Well, I don't blame you, because I'm doing the same:).
The 80's were a tacktabulous, shiny decade with outrageous clothing that was new to everyone at the time. Commonly previously to this decade, popular fashion in many decades were universal everywhere you went. Before the 80's, women didn't have many options other than the couple silhouettes, materials, or styles that would be available to them at the time. The 80's were a major turning point in this department. Suddenly, people were all dressing in their own "personal style" and it seemed that the rule was that the more eye-popping and crazy you dressed, the better.
The 80's were the home of lace and fingerless gloves, legwarmers, leggings, loose t-shirts, layered necklaces, layered bangles, layering shirts, leotards, pantsuits, shoulder pads, tulle skirts, dolphin shorts, Dr.Marten's boots, and ripped sweatshirts. Obviously, I could go on and on and on because there were SO many trends in the 80's! This was also a decade where many fashion and music icons came into existence. Icons such as Madonna, Cydni Lauper, Boy George, Michael Jackson, and Princess Di took over the fashion world and created many of the trends that were previously listed. The 80's was the decade of "power dressing" and expressing yourself through your look.
I like to describe the 80's as "tacktabulous", which is when something is either fabulously tacky (example: a lot of sequins), or SO tacky that it's almost fabulous (example: a hot pink sequined leotard with feathers sticking out at the collar). But unfortunately, sometimes the 80's was just plain tacky. Frizzed out dos, bright pink lips, and polyester? Ew. But the pictures are fun to look at, aren't they?:)
The thing I love about the 80's is that although half the time the people looked like Boy George's closet threw up on them, they OWNED their looks and had FUN playing dress up every morning. It wasn't just about the clothes; it was about the WHOLE look: from the hair, to the makeup, the accessories, the clothes, and even to the attitude. Just like the 80's Queen said herself:
"Ladies with an attitude/
Fellows that were in the mood/
Don't just stand there, let's get to it/
Strike a pose, there's nothing to it/
VOGUE!"
xoxo,
Audrey
